I really like this preview, esp now that we are seeing more of Larocca's art. And now we finally have mention of Boris. I getting bad vibes about his prognosis. We also see Boris has a daughter, Petra. So is she Valeria's mother? awkward if Doom has not disclosed her fate to anyone.
If I had the ability to coerce a Marvel writer, I would have him write a retcon of her death. Or at least have Doom launch another attack on Hell to regain her soul. That would be so cool if Cantwell does this.
Nice to see a Boris reference, but yeah, a bit ominous. I can't see Doom taking it well if things go badly for him. I was wondering about Petra as well. I don't think she can be Valeria's mother - she seems too young at first glance, and Doom has to ask whether she has children. Maybe Boris remarried and had more kids later?
(Also, until and unless one of the writers says otherwise, I'm choosing to believe that the post-Secret Wars rebuilding of the universe undid original Valeria's death. After all, Reed removed Doom's scars and faked his own death with the specific goal of giving Victor a fresh start and a second chance, so why not say he fixed that for the same reason as well?)
I have often wondered the same thing about Secret Wars and the status of the newly rebuilt Earth Prime. Truthfully, it does get wearisome that comic books have resorted to this easy fix when they write themselves into a corner or simply want a sales boost. Hey, let's do a relaunch! becomes the solution to a lot of things. Now selfishly, I would have no qualms with it negating Valeria's death.
Tom B seems to go along with just about anything the writers do. Sometimes this is good, sometimes it's bad. I still think the explanation for Doom's behavior in Slott's FF relaunch to be equivocating. For one thing, Brevoort also was Bendis's editor for "Infamous" so he knew full well the changes that were occuring with the character. His attempts at a rapprochement with Ben were quite sincere for example. At least I thought so.. then Boom! he's putting all the FF in death traps. And they reason was so flimsy and IMO showed lazy writing by Slott. Well we've gone over this before but it still annoys me. I'm looking forward to better things (I hope) from Cantwell.
I hope Tom B is giving Cantwell good guidance in his story and doesn't let him slip into some mistakes in Doom history. Petra is a bit of a mystery to us for now. And you are right to point out she looks too young to be Valeria's mother. But I was thinking perhaps the age was not conveyed to the artist? I suppose she could be a sister to Valeria's mother. We know absolutely nothing about her parents and why they are never seen. Did they die when she was young? It's just never been explained. She is unfortunately such a minor character and no one has bothered to give her much of a back story.
Yeah, it's interesting that Cantwell includes Victorious in this preview, so he's obviously up on the recent Slott stuff, and I'm curious if he's going to attempt to do anything to reconcile that a bit more with the Infamous Iron Man arc. (Though I struggle to see how when Slott's F4 is so wildly out of step with about the last ten years or more of Doom's characterisation and development. But I'll happily accept any weak handwave about deliberately burning his bridges and playing up to worst expectations after the trying to be a hero thing or whatever so we can just pretend it never happened and move on.)
And I was actually going to say that admittedly you can't always tell intended age from comic art, but I think the fact Doom asks about children implies she's the age to have younger kids and he doesn't know her that well, rather than being the mother of a child he grew up with. But I am kind of wondering if Cantwell just plain forgot or missed the detail of Valeria being established as Boris's granddaughter.
I hope we find out more about Petra. There's not many characters these days that have such a personal connection to Doom. Speaking of which, we've not seen Kristoff since just before SW began. He was still living with his father when the Molecule Man whisked him away and then their journey began to fight the Beyonders.
With Val and Franklin being aged a bit (5 years wasn't it?) they should all be the same age now. Kristoff did start out being a toddler, or perhaps 5 when we first see him. Now he's pretty much a young adult maybe 19 or 20. It's hard to say. But he appeared to be quite a bit older than Franklin. Maybe his exposure to the Remembrancer gave him a emotional maturity beyond his years.
I am also interested in what the advance copy has been mentioning and that is Doom's visions. Could this be a continuation of what was happening in Infamous. Bendis never did explain the future Tony/Sorcerer Supreme and a view of a possible future.

Oh, that could be interesting. I'm not a huge fan of the Sorcerer Supreme Tony angle (I like the take where magic is something that pure science types like Tony and Reed just fundamentally don't think the right way to learn rather than being able to eventually master it to catch up with Doom) but there was a whole bunch of mystical/magical stuff going on in the Bendis run that largely petered out without really going anywhere. Plus Tony never got any proper resolution with Doom in the rush of the final battle in IIM #600, so it would be great if this series gave us some scenes between them. I'm still hoping the reference to a frenemy in the solicits means Strange, but it would be even better if Tony could have some involvement as well.
I haven't been reading Dan Slott's Iron Man so I can't say whether or not there was any follow up there. I doubt there was any but can't be sure. It's just too hard to keep up with all these titles and some really don't interest me anymore. I find it easier to just wait and check some of them out when they appear on Marvel Unlimited.
It would be good to see Tony and Rhodey at least acknowledge that Doom saved them from the demon-possessed Hood. I bet that Tony never brings it up again but I hope I am wrong.
BTW I did read Strike Force #1 and the team (Winter Soldier, Blade, Wiccan, Spider-Woman, Angela and a few more) did go to the Temple of the Vishanti. Wiccan informs the group that Doctor Strange and Doom fought there. I wish he had said he "almost step-father". Now this makes me curious about the issue were Doom does appear and if the writer will revisit that.
Speaking of abandoned subplots, the one that still is out there is one that Ed Brubaker had in Captain America some years back. The Red Skull's operatives discovered some information on a mysterious man who came to Germany from another land and quickly made himself the ruler of a small kingdom in Medieval Germany. He was described as another Da Vinci who created many advanced tools, flying machines and mechanical men.
No, I haven't been following events on the Iron Man side of things, either. (I haven't really even been keeping up with Slott's Fantastic Four beyond skimming through to see if Doom appears. I end up letting the issues pile up unread for months because he seems to mostly just want to retread tired old storylines that I didn't find very interesting the first time.) I used to try and follow a bunch of comics sites and forums so I at least had a vague overview of what was going on in books I wasn't reading, but there's such a constant flood of events and relaunches and spin-offs and things that I just don't have the time these days.
I feel like Tony should at least have a bunch of questions for Doom next time they meet. He basically returned just in time to be confused about why Doom was playing Iron Man and helping out, only for Doom to promptly get injured in the battle, disappear back to Latveria and give up the hero thing again. You'd think Tony would want to follow up on what the heck that was all about at some point, out of curiosity about why he adopted the Iron Doom look if nothing else.
And I remember seeing some panels from that Brubaker storyline. I guess at least where there's time travel stuff involved it's still always possible for someone to pick it back up any time!
I always hoped that Brubaker would return to Marvel some day but he's staying with his creator owned stuff. I read how he recently signed a 5 year exclusive deal with Image anyway.
But the Victor and Tony talk got me to remembering a case of Bendis throwing something out there and then dropping it completely. This was after the time that Victor, Amara and Tony were talking at a restaurant. Really, Victor just invited himself to join them back when he used to just teleport everywhere. A few issues later, Tony finally figured out a way to trap him in a force field bubble. The issue ended there with Tony saying they're were going to have a talk and Tony was going ask questions, etc. Then....nothing. It was never brought up again!
I was hoping a last minute update of some kind on the Doctor Doom series would come out of NYCC over the weekend but didn't see anything when I googled. There was the debut Hasbro's Marvel Legends Doctor Doom, which looks pretty cool. But that was about it.
Just saw this on Alex Maleev's Twitter. He did a Doom commission at NYCC I've lost track of how many Doom paintings he's done since he worked on Infamous.

I kept this link bookmarked where Ed Brubaker gives an interview about it. Too bad no one followed up on this. I was hoping it would explain where the Von Doom name came from since that is not a name one would expect a Romani family would have.
