nomadicwriter: Doctor Doom shooting fireballs (blast radius)

Not much Doomy content here, so just a quick recap. With Rachna's help, Ben and Johnny warp to another universe, but only find an AU version of Reed Richards there. In this universe, Ben was killed by Galactus; Reed turned away from the rest of his family in his obsessive focus on taking Galactus down, but couldn't do it on his own. Doom stepped in and used his Ovoid mind-transfer trick (somebody's been reading their F4 back issues!) to take over Galactus's body. He swore to the people of Earth that he would never give in to the temptation to devour the planet, and kept his vow - but being energy-hungry and apparently much better at this whole 'efficiently devouring the universe' shtick than actual Galactus... pretty much ate everything else.

To be continued, in an issue called "Doom Universe".

Doom only gets a non-speaking role in the pages of AU flashbacks as Beast relates the history of this universe's F4, but since it gives Valerio Schiti the excuse to draw an absolutely gorgeous version of the classic Doom armour, I have no complaints. The old-school dot-shaded inking style works even better for the flashback scenes here, and props also to colourist Frank Martin for some beautiful muted colour work that manages to evoke a bit of the classic four-colour feel despite having a bit more subtlety than that. I also rather like Schiti's version of unkempt beardy obsessive AU Reed. (With visibly brown eyes! Call me a nerd, but I always notice and appreciate when people actually get that right, because so many colourists screw up and give him blue.)

This series is definitely taking the scenic route through the F4's greatest hits rather than getting to the point, but I do find that reassuring in its way: Zdarsky's obviously up on the characters' back histories, so provided that extends beyond the classic Silver Age stuff it should bode well for a decent treatment of Doom. Next issue seems like it's likely to be AU Doom shenanigans rather than checking in with our universe's Doom, but that could still be interesting - and I do miss the classic Doom armour sometimes.

So, not really a very Doomy issue this time out, but still promising, and with some lovely art!
