Oh, the voice and characterisation is definitely much stronger in this series. I think that's probably actually why I'm starting to get a little bit frustrated with all the jumping around - Cantwell's clearly capable of doing some great character stuff, so at this point I'd like to see Doom allowed to stick around and have some proper longer conversations with characters like Brashear instead of a two-line exchange and then he's gone again. I think I'm partly just nervous because you never know when a book might get suddenly cancelled or have the writer swapped out, so while the setup is all very well done, at this point I'd like to start seeing a bit more payoff on individual things as we go along instead of everything being spun out to wait for a big finale that we might never get to see.
And no, I haven't got around to picking up Zdarsky's Doom 2099, though I heard good things about it. I'm a bit short on time and money for comics these days, so there are a lot of things I've been vaguely planning to pick up on Comixology when the price goes down a bit. (Although they've just upped their prices so much it's now more expensive to buy digital comics from there than paper copies from my local shop, so I may have shot myself in the foot with that plan...)
