Our heroes arrive on a ruined world and recap the plot with another little chat about Doom's motivations for helping. He claims he's here to protect Ben and Johnny, mostly from themselves, calling them "spoiled, privileged children, wasting your dwindling abilities on a fool's errand", and telling Ben he's going to get Johnny killed.
They discover they're in a world devastated by Civil War, now ruled over by Evil One-Eyed Doctor Strange and Evil Unshaven Spider-Man. Evil Doc Strange disintegrates Doom's armour by aging it a thousand years, and tosses him, Ben and Johnny into an arena to fight some giant-sized attackers. Rachna has managed to avoid getting involved in the fight and is watching from the stands, but realises one of their attackers is an AU version of Disha, the mystery woman she's trying to help in their own world. She tries to intervene, but too late to stop Doom striking a killing blow.
Turns out Disha is her sister (I'm slightly disappointed, since I had my money on girlfriend) and she's looking for an AU version of her for a compatible replacement body. Johnny's not happy she's been pursuing this ethically dubious agenda instead of truly helping search for the rest of the F4. Doom manages to take down Evil Doc Strange and teleport the four of them away, but Rachna flees with the multisect. Doom leaps after her and is swept up with her as she shifts universes, while Ben and Johnny are left behind.
Ramón Pérez on art this time out. He does a great, expressive version of the Iron Doom armour, with some particularly good panels in the sequence where he's talking to Ben at the beginning. (Though I'm glad he's not drawing the classic Doom armour, since the one panel we get of that in the recap page at the beginning looks super dorky. I'll miss the Iron Doom if/when it goes - it's such a fantastic design it seems to look great in any art style, while the classic Doom look can be a lot more hit and miss.) Pérez's unmasked Doom doesn't work so well for me, but it does at least feel like it's aiming for handsome Doom rather than the craggy, lumpy look a lot of artists give him, even if it doesn't suit my personal vision. I do quite like the side-on panel of him where he's talking about Rachna having an agenda, but the other angles not so much.
Anyway, yay for plot progression, though it doesn't seem like there's much time left before the new F4 comic is scheduled to begin. I guess without Rachna leading them astray, they'll be able to leap straight to the correct universe next time? Also, the events of the annual where Doom found out Reed was alive aren't yet acknowledged here, making that feel like a bit of a pointless digression. But I guess things should be moving much faster from here on.
