nomadicwriter: Doctor Doom on his throne (Doom throne)

Ben and Johnny now have the Multisect, and Johnny wants to go looking for the rest of the F4. Ben manages to put him off by insisting they fix Johnny's powers first, and they go and see Hercules to find out how he got his powers restored when he lost them. He takes them to see Rachna, the scientist Ben hung out with at the science event in issue #1, who turns out be an expert on superpowers. They can't afford her fees, so they agree to take her with them when they go universe-hopping. However, she breaks the bad news: it's not just Johnny, Ben is losing his powers too. The F4's powers are connected, and them being in separate universes is causing them all to slowly weaken.

Meanwhile, Doom goes to confront the Mad Thinker, who can tell the creation of new universes looks like Reed's work and is puzzling over his disappearance. The Thinker has stolen a bunch of gadgets from Reed's storage units, including something unspecified that Doom is looking for. (I assume we're supposed to think he's still searching for the Multisect, but it's actually something else.) The Thinker has plans to take over to fill the void left by Reed's disappearance, but Doom considers that while Richards may not have been his equal, the Thinker is far below both of them. However, the Thinker zaps him with a teleportation ray to send him away to Antarctica, and starts to go about the process of changing his appearance to look more like Reed.

I like where this series seems to be going, though it's obviously taking the scenic route to get there, which means a whole lot of excuses to bring in random characters and only brief cameos for Doom at the moment. But they're good cameos! I do like the way Doom's being written here, though it still takes some minor handwaving to reconcile with his portrayal in Iron Man. (You could always argue that since he's spending this book executing a scheme and going after villains, he's allowing himself to be more old-school Doomy than when he's consciously trying to persuade people that he's reformed.)

Valerio Schiti is the artist for this issue, and I really like his take on the Iron Doom armour: he gives it much more malevolent look with a really angular faceplate that makes it far more distinct from the standard Iron Man armour. It kind of reminds me of Marko Djurdjevic's really skull-like take on the classic faceplate, which was always a fave of mine. I also love the use of old-school printing dots for shading in the inking. It gives everything a subtly retro 'comic-booky' look that is totally my aesthetic.

All in all, good fun! The plot's maybe not moving all that quickly, but it doesn't feel like it's dragging either, and although I think it would be nice to get more Doom, to be fair I pretty much always think that.
