nomadicwriter: Doctor Doom on his throne (Doom throne)

So, the final issue is here.

The issue opens with a flashforward eight months to the point when Sue is giving birth. Coulson visits Reed in his prison cell to ask for help with the incursions from other universes, which are getting out of control: what would he do? Reed says he's already done it. Coulson is impatient, and asks him if he even knows why he's in prison. He says, "Because of my many crimes," but that it doesn't seem very important with the lives of everyone they know in the balance.

There's a huge energy influx centred on the hospital, and everyone goes to fight a bunch of giant Cyclopean versions of Marvel universe figures - including Doom, who decides, "Doom will save them all," grabs and axe and teleports off to take part. ("Such a twisted universe you must hail from," he says. "I suspect I would like it there...")

Sue gives birth to a healthy baby girl, who is glowing. Literally. The energy she gives off seems to heal the rift between universes and get rid of the bad guys. (Doom takes advantage of this opportunity to raise a fist and yell, "All hail Doom! Your savoir!")

Ben gives Sue a little speech about how he knows her daughter is Reed's child but he loves them both anyway. Sue reveals that it's not Reed's child at all - it's Ben's. Reed shows up escorted by Coulson to explain. Turns out that Reed convinced Sue to do what their teachers always taught them to do back when they were teenagers: find a third path. They used Ben's DNA from a convenient SHIELD lab to perform the insemination, and took a leap of faith that it would work. The kid isn't Reed's, but she's clearly powerful, and maybe that might be enough to save the world.

Well... that wrapped up a lot better than I'd worried about, even if it was pretty rushed thanks to the cancellation. The script is by Stuart Moore based on Fialkov's story; the writing's decent, though there's so much plot to squeeze in so there's not much room for anything else. Still not mad on this art style, but it's serviceable enough.

Overall, this series was kind of a sad mess of wasted potential, let down by some dodgy art choices and cancelled before it had much of a chance, but at least it leaves us with a decent new status quo - the Ultimate Fantastic Four more or less reunited, and Doom resurrected and on relatively good terms with them and the rest of the heroes. Hopefully someone else will pick that up and run with it at some point.
