Secret Wars #7

The issue begins with Doom sending his armies off to fight the masked prophet who's been preaching that he's not a god - revealed to be Maximus of the Inhumans. Doom chooses to watch the battle from the throne room, since he fears he would "lose himself to anger" if he joined the fight directly. (Which is kinda fascinating, since Doom is not usually one for doubting the rightness of his impulses - has killing Strange shaken his faith in his self control?)

Doom's armies have the advantage, but things are breaking down - Mister Sinister decides to double-cross Doom and switch sides, and 616 Thor has caused a schism among the army of Thors by trying to convince them Doom is not the good guy. She leads a group of them to attack Doom's barons, leading him to note, "I am betrayed. Again." (Not sure I was meant to read that "Again." in tones of "Siiiigh... that was predictable," but I did, heh.)

It turns out the battle is a distraction orchestrated by the two Reeds so that they can slip a team past Doom. Ultimate Reed doesn't think Maximus's army will last long, and asks 616 Reed about the details of his secret plan. It seems that this involves the artefacts that T'Challa and Namor found in Doctor Strange's secret base. It turns out that, having the title of King of the Dead, T'Challa has the power to command the legions of zombies who lurk outside the Shield wall, and he plans to send them through Strange's teleportation device, the Siege Courageous - which will, apparently, not just transport them, but grant them "a new life. A second chance." The army of the dead prepares to go to war...

So, lots of setup and fight scenes this issue, and sadly not much page-time for Doom - I think I read that issue 7 ended up running long and being split into two, hence the fact the series now has nine instead of eight issues, which probably explains why this one's a tad plot-light. But the implications of the ending are definitely interesting - looks like this is the plot device that will restore any inconveniently dead characters back to life for the the post-Secret Wars world. The question is, will it be used to restore Doctor Strange? I assume it only works on zombified dead rather than dead-dead, but I'm not sure of how the rules of zombification actually work on Battleworld, so it could probably be handwaved either way. Interesting...

The art and colouring continues to be gorgeous, just like I say every issue. (But it's always true!) Ribic's zombies in particular are fantastic - I absolutely love his zombie Captain Britain with the slumped pose and staring eyeballs. The man gives good zombie.

So, overall, largely setup, but very pretty setup, and when I'm enjoying it this much I'd rather have the story slightly padded out than have it be too rushed. Roll on issue 8! (Hopefully with no more delays.)
