X-Men #16 Review

Doom also makes an appearance in this week's X-Men #16; it's a bit of a setup issue with a large cast, so it's hard to get much a feel for how it's going to go, but so far, not too bad. I'm certainly willing to try out the next issue.

The FF kids are on a field trip to the Bermuda triangle, where they find a mysteriously appearing buoy with a distress call from Lee Forrester. (Former love interest to both Cyclops and Magneto.) Reed, Sue, Ben and Doom team up with the X-Men and travel through a portal to an alternate dimension, where they find the natives of a prehistoric-looking world under attack by aliens in UFOs.

Molina's art doesn't look quite as beautiful when he's partnered with a colourist as it does when he paints it himself, but that's not exactly a complaint. He does a great, distinctive looking take on Doom. It's hard to get a great deal of a feel for Gischler's writing of him, since Doom hasn't had much to do yet, but he's got the imperious voice well enough, and there's a nice moment when Cyclops makes the unwise move of trying to order him about.

(That's a fabulous expression from Sue there, too. Heh.)

I quite like Gischler's Magneto, and he gets the best line of the issue with his "Isn't Doom providing enough ego for your satisfaction?" comment seen in the preview, but sadly there's no real chance for him to interact with Doom this issue. Hopefully we'll get to see the two of them together more later in the storyline, because that's the main draw of this whole setup for me.

Also, Gischler really missed a trick with having Namor appear in the background of the initial X-Men scenes and then just disappear without taking any part in the conversation. They're dealing with Sue Storm, his on-again off-again ally Doom, and an ocean-based mission, and Namor just slinks off without a word to anyone? That seems... unlikely. It would have been better to just not even show his presence at all.

Anyway, perfectly acceptable comic with nice art, but not greatly wowing me just yet.

This is the first issue in a four part storyline, so it remains to be seen how the rest of it goes.
