I'm not dead! And neither is this comm. (I'm just woefully failing at keeping track of what's going on in comics at the moment.) This post is a bit of a multi-recap of several recent comics, partly because my comic shop got one of them in late, and partly because the story's - slightly - more comprehensible taken in larger chunks. Spoilers below the cuts.

I haven't been following this title since the last Doom cameo I reviewed which was, er, all the way back in issue #7, so given the density of Hickman's plotting I expect to be a bit lost. But his version of Doctor Doom is always worth showing up to the party for.

Spoilers )

Not sure if this plot thread will be immediately continued in issue #25 or Doom's part will be sidelined for a while again, but I'll definitely be keeping an eye out. Excellent stuff.

Doom also has a cameo in New Avengers, following on from the events of issue #6. It's only brief, but Hickman writing Doom is always worth turning up for...

CBR has the lettered preview for Fantastic Four #9.

Tiny spoilers )

In other intriguing news, this Tom Brevoort interview about New Avengers reveals that Doom will be back next issue:

The introduction of Doom to the proceedings is not a one off, minor thing. We'll see him again immediately in "New Avengers #7, so he's definitely a player on the chessboard at this point.

Looks like the long, Doomless drought may finally be over! (...This is going to be bad news for my wallet.)

Unexpected Doctor Doom is unexpected! But always welcome, especially when written by Jonathan Hickman. I haven't been following New Avengers, but somebody alerted me to a Doom appearance in this issue, so I grabbed a copy.

Sad to reach the final issue of Jonathan Hickman's fabulous Fantastic Four run. There's a definite sense of the storyline being wrapped up before its time, but it's gracefully done, and I'm pretty glad Hickman got to do it himself instead of leaving it for someone else to handle.

All in all, a very satisfying finish that still leaves me a little wistful for what might have been in a world where Hickman got to stay on. Looking forward to the follow-up in FF #23.

Cosmic Booknews has the preview for Jonathan Hickman's final F4 issue - and it sees him revisiting the Doctor Doom storyline.

Now there's a gloriously welcome surprise! Even if it's just resetting things to status quo for Fraction's run, at least we get to see Hickman write Doom again. Here's hoping it's a crossover with the final FF so we get a two-issue arc rather than just one.

As an unexpected bonus, this week's Fantastic Four point one issue also features an appearance by Doom. Well, sort of...

A great, creepy done-in-one story that has the kind of alternative take on the Doom-Reed relationship I always adore. Highly recommended!

CBR has a great interview with Jonathan Hickman about his Fantastic Four/FF run coming to an end. Seems like he's not necessarily planning to follow up on the situation he set up for Doom, or at least not in this book (I still hold out hope he'll be on Avengers and continue it there) but he's got some interesting stuff to say about his take on Doom and the "uncle" relationship he has with Valeria.

FF #4 is currently free to read on Marvel Digital. Features the Council of Doom meeting at the Baxter Building, plus Barry Kitson's rather magnificent rendering of a sulky Doom face.

Sad news: it's been confirmed that Jonathan Hickman's awesome run on Fantastic Four and FF will end in October with Fantastic Four #611 and FF #23. No news yet on who might be taking over; I just hope it's not somebody who's going to immediately overturn all the great stuff that he's done with Doom.

In slightly better news, there is a hint that we might not have seen the last of Hickman's take on Doom just yet:
[Hickman] re-energized elements of the mythos from Galactus to Atlantis to the Inhumans and more, as well as finding new roles for classic characters like Doctor Doom and the Celestials. All this and more will factor into his final stories as he brings his larger arc to a grand conclusion.

"Generally speaking, all the FF 'world' elements I've been playing with will get revisited," he teases.

Marvel.com has FF #2: Doom Nation available free to read online. It's a very Doom heavy issue and one of my absolute favourites, and pretty much sets up the status quo for Doom's current relationships with the Future Foundation and his son Kristoff.
