Unexpected Doctor Doom is unexpected! But always welcome, especially when written by Jonathan Hickman. I haven't been following New Avengers, but somebody alerted me to a Doom appearance in this issue, so I grabbed a copy.

The expected epilogue wrap-up issue - and the much hoped-for explanation of exactly what happened to Doom...

Marvel.com has FF #2: Doom Nation available free to read online. It's a very Doom heavy issue and one of my absolute favourites, and pretty much sets up the status quo for Doom's current relationships with the Future Foundation and his son Kristoff.

Well, the 50th anniversary issue is here! The bad news is, Doom only has a brief cameo. The good news is that it's still really awesome, and totally worth the $7.99 price tag. 96 pages of new material, divided up into two extra length stories and three short ones, all written by Hickman and part of the current ongoing storyline.

All in all? That was incredible. Best comic I've read all year, by a long way - and this is only the first instalment of the 9-part final act. Luckily, FF #12 comes out next week, and that's when we finally get to the "All Hope Lies in Doom" storyline. I may have to start camping out in front of my comic shop.

Marvel.com has just added FF #1 to the free-to-read section. Doom only has a cameo, but it has all the setup for him joining forces with the FF.

Another free digital comic up at Marvel.com: Fantastic Four #583, which is the one where Valeria Richards makes a deal with Doctor Doom. One of my favourite scenes from Hickman's F4 run.

I continue to love this series as much as ever. It feels like Hickman's spinning the next phase of the story here; there are lots of intriguing little details in this one that seem like setup and foreshadowing for what's to come. Plus there are some developments for Doom...

Spoilers )

Next month, we've got another two issues of FF coming out, and then the Fantastic Four returns and both comics will be running side by side.

CBR has the lettered preview for FF #9. Only two pages of story, but they are pages of Doom being awesome, so who's complaining?

This an awesome issue, and Doom is all over it owning the show. After things got bogged down a bit by the two issue interlude with the Inhumans, this series is back on track and hurtling forward at great speed - and our Latverian overlord gets all the best moments.

Extensive spoilers below )

Long may this level of awesome continue! And with Doom taking prime position on the cover of issue #9, it looks very likely it will.

Still more Doomy goodness - the lettered preview for FF #8 is out, and at last, his Doomness is back on the scene. And so is Steve Epting's art.

Another fascinating chapter in Hickman's FF storyline: the plotlines are all coming together now, and we finally learn the nature of the threat that Doom's help is needed to combat.

This one's a bit of an exposition issue and we don't get to see a huge amount of Doctor Doom, but there are some great touches, and the setup promises very entertaining things ahead.

FF #3: Whatever Happened to All Those Reeds? )

Only two weeks to wait for the next issue: FF #4 is out on May 25th.

Hickman's F4 continues awesome, and issue two is pretty much All Doom, All The Time. Spoilers for this and recent issues under the cut.

FF #2: Doom Nation )

Tremendously excited for the third issue of this. At least it's only a two week wait this time around...

CBR has the lettered preview up for FF #2.

Unsurprisingly, Doom is not choosing to play well with others.

If you're not reading the Fantastic Four, now is one of the best times in decades to get into it. Since Dark Reign, the series has been in the hands of writer Jonathan Hickman, and he's slowly been unfolding a very well-planned story arc that gets more epic with each passing issue.

Reed's actions in Civil War and the seeming lack of consequences have been an elephant in the room in Marvel fandom for a long time. Hickman's finally come back to pick up that thread, but he's doing it in a smart and interesting way. Instead of just rehashing past events, one of the major underlying themes of his F4 run is digging into Reed's psychology, exploring how he ended up on this path and what kind of bad places it might be leading him. There's a lot of very clever character work going on behind the complex plots and big ideas.

The first act of Hickman's storyline has just drawn to a close, and we're now starting to see how the threads all pull together. There's a war coming, and a devastating future that needs to be avoided at all costs. Reed's own hubris may just be to blame for what's to come. And there's a message from the future warning that if they want to escape disaster, all hope lies in Doom...

Meta, some scanned panels, and a whole lot of enthusiastic rambling lie beyond the cut.

Spoilers for Dark Reign: Fantastic Four, Fantastic Four #570-588, and FF #1 )

So seriously, even if you've never been able to get interested in the Fantastic Four before, now is great time to take a second look. This is definitely the best writing this comic's had in years.

Comic Book Resources has a textless advance preview (and a mildly spoilery summary) up for FF #3. The preview for issue 2 is also up here if you haven't seen it.

Some very brief thoughts )

FF #2 is out on April 27th and FF #3 on May 11th. (There are two issues coming out in May, and the same again in July: looks like they're accelerating the schedule to get issue #12 - what would be Fantastic Four #600 - out on the 50th anniversary in November. Considering how excited I am about this series, I am definitely not complaining.)
